Is it really necessary to walk 10,000 steps a day?
By: Cesar Moquete
Walking 10,000 steps a day has become one of the most popular goals for staying healthy. But is it really necessary to reach that number?
The answer is no. Although walking is an excellent way to improve our health, there is no magic number of steps that guarantees good physical fitness.
Where do the 10,000 steps come from?
Interestingly, this number didn’t come from scientific research, but from a commercial campaign for a Japanese pedometer in the 1960s.
Over time, 10,000 steps became so popular that it turned into a standard benchmark on smartwatches and fitness apps.
How many steps do we really need?
Current research indicates that the health benefits begin well before reaching 10,000 steps.
Several studies have observed significant benefits at around 6,000-8,000 steps a day in older adults and 8,000-10,000 in younger adults, especially in relation to a reduced risk of mortality.
However, walking less also brings benefits. For a sedentary person, going from 3,000 to 5,000 steps a day can already represent a major improvement.
What matters most is moving more and progressing from our own starting point.
Is quantity all that matters?
No. Intensity counts too.
Walking at a good pace can improve our cardiovascular fitness, but daily steps do not replace strength training or other physical activities.
The ideal is to combine everyday movement with an exercise program tailored to our needs.
Small changes, big benefits
Increasing our daily steps can be easier than it seems:
- Walk on your everyday trips.
- Take the stairs.
- Go for a walk after eating.
- Get up regularly if you work sitting down.
You don’t need to obsess over the step counter. What matters is adding more movement to your daily routine.
