How Long Should You Rest Between Sets?

By: Gabriel García

When we work out at the gym, we tend to pay close attention to the weight we lift, the number of repetitions we perform, and the exercises we choose. However, there’s one aspect we often overlook: rest time between sets.

Is it better to rest for 30 seconds, one minute, or three minutes? The answer mainly depends on your goal and the intensity of the exercise.

If your goal is to build strength

When lifting heavy weights, our bodies need more time to recover and perform well in the next set.

In these cases, rest periods of 2 to 5 minutes are generally recommended, especially for demanding exercises such as squats, deadlifts, and bench presses.

Getting enough rest helps maintain training quality and allows you to lift heavy weights without accumulating excessive fatigue.

If your goal is to build muscle

For years, resting for just 30 to 60 seconds was recommended for muscle hypertrophy.

However, we now know that longer rest periods can also be beneficial for muscle growth, as they help maintain performance and allow you to complete more high-quality repetitions.

As a general guideline, rest periods of 1 to 3 minutes can work well, with longer breaks for particularly demanding exercises.

The key isn’t to finish every set completely exhausted, but to accumulate an appropriate amount of training volume.

If your goal is to improve muscular endurance

When aiming to sustain repeated efforts with light or moderate weights, shorter rest periods can be used.

In certain workouts, 30 to 90 seconds may be enough.

However, shorter rest periods don’t necessarily mean a better workout. Recovery should always be adapted to the intensity and goal of the session.

Does resting less mean training harder?

Not necessarily.

Finishing a workout with an elevated heart rate and feeling extremely tired doesn’t mean you’ve achieved a greater muscle-building stimulus.

In fact, resting too little can reduce the number of repetitions you’re able to perform and affect the quality of your workout.

Sometimes, taking an extra minute of rest can help you perform a much more effective set.

Learn to use rest to your advantage

There is no single perfect recovery time for every exercise or every person.

As a general guideline:

  • · Strength: 2 to 5 minutes.
  • · Muscle hypertrophy: 1 to 3 minutes.
  • · Muscular endurance: 30 to 90 seconds.

Remember, these are general recommendations. Rest periods also depend on the weight you’re lifting, the exercise you’re performing, and your fitness level.
