Do You Need to Change Your Routine to Keep Progressing?
You’ve been doing the same exercises for several weeks, and now the question comes up: should you change your routine to keep progressing?
There’s a common idea that we should constantly change our exercises to prevent the body from “getting used to them”. However, sticking with a routine for a period of time is essential for improving technique, gaining strength and being able to measure your progress.
The key isn’t changing for the sake of changing, but checking whether your training is still working.
How can you keep progressing?
To improve, you don’t necessarily need new exercises. What’s important is providing your body with a progressively greater stimulus, which we know as progressive overload.
You can achieve this in different ways:
– Gradually increasing the weight.
– Performing one or more additional repetitions.
– Improving your technique and control of the movement.
– Increasing training volume when necessary.
– Improving your range of motion.
If a few weeks ago you were doing 10 repetitions with a certain weight and now you can do 12 while maintaining good technique, you are progressing, even if you’re still doing the same exercise.
When should you change your routine?
Changing your training can be recommended if you haven’t made any progress for several weeks, your goals have changed, certain exercises are causing you discomfort, or you simply need to regain your motivation.
But this doesn’t mean you have to change everything.
Sometimes, simply replacing a few exercises, modifying the volume or intensity, or reorganising your training days is enough to start progressing again.
How often should you change your routine?
There is no universal rule.
Before changing your routine, ask yourself:
Am I increasing the weight or number of repetitions?
Is my technique improving?
Am I still training with sufficient intensity?
Is my training still aligned with my goals?
If the answer is yes, you probably don’t need to change it yet.
