Is it better to work out in the morning or in the afternoon?
By: Sebastián Chis
Some people prefer to start the day with a workout, while others perform better at the end of their day. But is there really an ideal time to exercise?
The answer is that it depends on each person, their goals and their habits. Although our body goes through changes throughout the day, consistency is usually more important than the time you choose.
Morning workouts: start the day with energy
For many people, training first thing in the morning is a great way to build a routine and start the day feeling good.
Its advantages include:
- It makes it easier to keep the habit before other commitments get in the way.
- It can improve mood and concentration.
- It frees up the rest of the day for other activities.
However, some people need more time to wake up and may notice lower performance when they first get out of bed.
Afternoon workouts: better performance?
Several studies have found that strength, power and physical performance tend to reach slightly higher values in the afternoon, although there are individual differences.
This may be related to factors such as body temperature, circadian rhythms and arousal levels.
In addition, training in the afternoon can be a good way to switch off after the working day.
That said, very intense sessions close to bedtime can make it harder for some people to rest.
Does the time of day affect results?
Although there may be small differences in performance depending on the time of day, there is not enough evidence to say that training in the morning or in the afternoon is universally better for building muscle, losing fat or improving health.
Our body can also adapt to training regularly at a particular time.
That is why choosing a schedule you can stick to is usually more important than looking for the theoretically perfect moment.
So, what is the best time to train?
The one that best fits your life and lets you train consistently, with enough energy and good recovery.
If you train in the morning and feel good, keep doing it. If you prefer the afternoon and perform better, that is also an excellent option.
What matters is not what time you train, but how you train and how consistently you do it.
